Startups are risky in any business climate. Airline startups during a global travel crisis...now that makes for an interesting story. In North America, 2021 has seen the launch of Avelo Airlines and Breeze Airways and the introduction of Connect Airlines-due to begin flying this fall. Additionally, charter and ACMI airlines OWG and GlobalX Airlines are expected to get off the ground in the coming months. The last 18 months have also seen small airlines like Flair Airlines and Swoop move from tiny startups to regional competitors. Worldwide, there are plans for more than 300 new airlines in various startup phases with more than 90 airline startups taking to the sky this year. Leadership at these airlines will tell you that a time of disruption is the best time to start a new airline. Gates are easier to come by, planes are cheaper than ever and many of the leading airlines have experienced turnover of staff.
