In its original form it won immediate recognition as a useful and authoritative treatment of a significant and rapidly expanding segment of the life insurance business. It was adopted for classroom use by many prominent universities and became the foundation of the group life training program of the leading companies in that area. More recently, it has served as the basic text for the group life insurance portion of the course of study leading to the professional designation of Chartered Life Under writer. During the course of its two revisions the book has been sub stantially reorganized and extensively rewritten to make it an even more useful educational tool. The author has approached each revision with his usual zeal and imagination and has not been content to settle for minor alterations. Each revision has been a major undertaking, greatly enhancing the value and teachability of the book. One of the notable features of the current revision is the analysis in depth of the problems created by the horizontal and vertical extension of the group concept. Another contribution of this revision is the expanded treatment of the rate-making process, including a description of the deriva tion and characteristics of the newly developed Commissioners 1960 Standard Group Mortality Table.
