<subfield code="a">This book was written to meet the increasing demand for a definitive textbook that combines textual discussion of the principles un derlying agency financial management with a practical analysis of actual problems of financial control of the life insurance agency. This book was also designed to fit the Study Program of the C.L.U. Management Education Program offered by the American College of Life Underwriters. Modern business competition and inflationary pressures make the financial management of agencies more important than ever before. Because of the fact that agency costs constitute as much as 70 per cent of the total expenses of a life insurance company, it is easy to see what importance the company must attach to the expenses in curred in agency operations. Today the life insurance manager must particularly be mindful of the costs of his activities in order to con tinue profitable operations. The purpose of this book is to present a comprehensive analysis of the legal, accounting, managerial, and economic aspects of the financial control of an agency as seen from the viewpoint of the agency head. Most of the book is written in terms of the problems of the agency operations rather than to speak of over-all company finan cial control. References to the broader company operations are made. only to clarify the situation in the agency. The emphasis of the book is upon fundamental principles that will serve as a guide to the manager in any type of life insurance agency. There is no attempt to establish a single standard approach to financial management of the agency. Instead, various procedures to be followed in obtaining a knowledge of the financial operations of the agency are discussed. But this is not meant to be an exhaustive study of methods, and some methods are described only to serve as examples of the application of basic principles of financial control. The plan of the book is to present the material in four parts. Part I covers some of the fundamental background subjects under lying financial management including a description of the types of agencies and the need for financial management as well as a brief.</subfield>
