This study examines whether underwriting methods representation, medical examination, extra premiums, and coverage effectively mitigate adverse selection using data from a major Taiwanese life and health insurer. Using 71,725 policy claims, the authors analyze the impact of pre-existing conditions, medical exams, and extra premiums on claim costs and loss ratios. Results show that insureds with pre-existing conditions or medical exams have higher claim costs, but extra premiums and coverage limits offset this risk, equalizing loss ratios across risk groups. A quasi-difference-in-differences analysis confirms extra premiums significantly reduce loss ratios. Additionally, insureds with pre-existing conditions receive lower coverage, while those passing medical exams obtain higher coverage. Residual correlation tests reveal evidence of adverse selection, but underwriting practices mitigate its effects. Findings underscore the importance of effective underwriting in reducing information asymmetry and improving insurer performance
