520  ‎$a‎Modern coal fired power stations burn pulverized fuel ash (PFA). Radiological studies of workers exposed to PFA undertaken in the Midlands and South Wales between 1950 and 1961 are reviewed. These studies did not reveal the existence of any pneumoconiosis except in men with an occupational history of coal mining. A study of 246 boiler cleaners undertaken in the Midlands Region between 1974 and 1977 is described, in which four men had category one or less pneumoconiosis which could only be explained on the basis of their employment. In cytotoxicity tests PFA dust produced the same reaction as dusts known to be non-fibrogenic and Ames tests on the extracts of hooper PFA were negative. It is recommended that PFA be classified as a nuisance dust
