520  ‎$a‎South Africa's insurance sector reflects the country's dual nature -and the attendant sets of problems and opportunities. Put simply, the problems are in the already developed "first-world" sector. The opportunities, huge but not easily seized, are in the underdeveloped, or "third world" sector. The more mature sector of the insurance market has to contend with a weakening economy. South Africa has the continent's most developed economy, but like all emerging markets, it is vulnerable to financial shocks such as those from Asia and Brazil. It has an added weakness in that much of its income derives from stressed international commodity markets
