5208 ‎$a‎The 1,149-foot (350 meter) Stratosphere Tower, with its 13-story mixed-used pod topped with amusement-park thrill rides, is unlike any other structure on the Las Vegas strip. Fire protection engineers at Rolf Jensen and Associates needed to create a performance-based design that provided equivalent protection for the unorthodox structure. They did this by developing a system loaded with redundancies. If a fire protection system in the tower fails, at least one other stands ready to supplant it. (editor's note: this article was written before the September 11 attack on the World Trade Center)
