<abstract>En la actualidad, las organizaciones que trabajan con la calidad del agua están en busca de un centinela ambiental que sirva como advertencia de los peligros químicos potencialmente carcinógenos en las aguas. Varios institutos de investigación están desarrollando un bacteriófago recuperable insertado en un pez transgénico que puede ser el medio que los investigadores están buscando. Pero existen sustancias químicas que tienen efectos muy sutiles en los organismos vivientes, como la inducción de mutaciones genéticas que puedan dar lugar a un cáncer u otras enfermedades. A pesar de los esfuerzos hasta el presente, la ciencia no tiene un claro entendimiento de las relaciones dosis-efecto de la mayoría de estos químicos</abstract>
