<abstract>Se analiza la evolución de los recursos propios de las cajas de ahorros entre 1994 y 2004. El crecimiento de los activos de las cajas y su mayor asunción de riesgos han exigido cada vez más recursos propios, que un buen número de cajas se han visto incapaces de obtener mediante la retención de sus excedentes. Por ello, algunas cajas han tenido que recurrir a otras formas de aumento de recursos propios, básicamente financiaciones subordinadas y participaciones preferentes, vías aún no agotadas y que han sido preferidas por las entidades antes de utilizar la nueva figura de las cuotas participativas</abstract>
