<abstract>Hace 25 años se comenzó a hablar de las multinacionales de países emergentes. Entonces, un pequeño grupo de economías en desarrollo empezaba a convertirse en fuente de inversión extranjera directa. Desde finales de los años ochenta, otros países emergentes se han unido como focos importantes de IED. El número de empresas multinacionales en la lista de Fortune 500, cuyas sedes están fuera de América del Norte, Europa, Japón y Oceanía, subió de 26 en 1988   a 61 en 2005. </abstract>
