Many consumer problems of legal services clients involve creditors and credit. More than half of legal services eligible families own automobiles. Many of these cars are bought on credit, with the creditor requiring the debtor to purchase automobile physical damage insurance to protect the collateral. This may result in various abuses as the creditor uses its market power to sell the debtor overpriced insurance. Even when a legal services client does not purchase insurance through a creditor, the size of the insurance premium will require the client to deal with a creditor to finance the premium, often at excessive rates. This article describes the various problems low income car owners face in these two situations, listing a number of legal strategies available to remedy these abuses
