As highlighted in our most recent outlook, the US life/annuity industry in general continues to perform well and build capital despite significant uncertainty in the macro enviroment. In the financial markets, interest rates took a turn and reversed course in 2019. A long- awaited correction in the equity market did not materialize -indeed, the market saw only further appreciation. In addition, the credit markets signaled few warning signs of an impending collapse. Total direct premiums and deposits were up 6.1% through third quarter of 2019 versus the same period the prior year. Pre-tax operating income was $38.8nbillion, and realized investment losses remain well contained
