An analysis by public health nonprofits found that the total number of U.S. deaths in 2017 caused by alcohol, drugs, or suicide hit the highest since federal mortality data began being recorded in 1999-killing twice as many Americans as two decades prior. On the surface, the challenge actuaries face regarding the evolution of health and life insurance underwriting is straightforward. Simply put, actuaries are bound by their strict professionalism standards of conduct, practice, and qualification, as well as the overriding legal requirements that must guide their work</abstract>
