Balance is the non-life insurance sector have been affected by the widening of the spread between Italian and German 10-year sovereign bonds, which reached 320 basis point (bps) on 18 March, 2020, before narrowing again after the European Central Bank (ECB) announced a EUR 750 billion bond-buying programme (the pandemic Energency Purchase Programme). There has also been a widenning in corporate credit spreads and a substantial fall in the market value of Italian listed companies. AM Best notes that, while Italian insurers have a concentration in domestic exposure in their asset allocation, they are also exposed to volatile global financial markets.
