Funding to travel tech startups saw a 33% year-over-year (VoY) drop last year, from $68 in 2019 to $48 in 2020, as the Covid-19 pandemic severely impacted the travel industry. Deal count followed a similar trend, with a total of 241 deals in 2020, down from 336 in 2019. Deal count hit a 7-year low in Q3'20 but began to recover in Q4'20, signaling that investors aren't completely shunning the travel tech space. Early-tage (seed, angel, and Series A) deal share dropped significantly in 2020, representing just over half of total deals. lnvestors focused on later-stage and more established deals and players as opportunistic investments or lifelines toa id companies in weathering the pandemic. Startups focusing on local and outdoor destinations are garnering investor attention. Anticípate that demand for outdoor-centric accommodation and experiences will remain high in a post-pandemic world. Short-term rental and hostel startups catering to nomadic and remote workers kept attracting funding, as demand for remote working remains high. Monitor how key hospitality players adapt their offerings to meet sustained demand in remate working services.
