This paper investigates the role of attitude towards the NHS as a prior decision process enchancing the demand for private health insurance by means of an application to a the Catalan Health System. We pay special attention on the particular benefits associated with private health care. Especially we consider the determinants explaining why the public health system may not provide satisfactory health care to some users, and therefore they are compelled to search fot additional coverage (conceptualized as a access benefits) in the alternative private system. A simple model is outlined as describing the decision process and a econometric two-process estimation has been carried out. The estimation results suggest that there may be two processes underlying the health insurance demand, a first process defining the attitude towards the NHS and a second process defining the purchase of private health insurance. The public policy implications relate the development of the private health insurance market to the attitudes and benefit perceptions from health care received from the NHSMateria / lugar / evento: Seguro de asistencia sanitaria Sistemas sanitarios Salud pública Demanda de seguros Análisis empírico Otros autores: Jornada Modelización Economica Aplicada (30 de junio de 2000: [Barcelona?])
