<abstract displayLabel="Summary">Este artículo tiene como objetivo fundamental evaluar las recientes reformas de los coeficientes de inversión obligatoria y de caja en España, desde el punto de vista de sus implicaciones presupuestarias. Estos coeficientes, que exigen que los intermediarios financieros mantengan en sus carteras una proporción de sus recursos ajenos en forma de determinados activos con una rentabilidad inferior a su coste de oportunidad, han contribuido de forma significativa, especialmente en los últimos años, a la financiación del sector público español. Sin embargo, el proceso de unificación del mercado bancario europeo ha llevado a que las autoridades se plantearan la conveniencia de iniciar un programa de reducción de los coeficientes, de modo que a finales de 1992 éstos se sitúen a un nivel compatible con el mantenimiento de la posición competitiva de la banca española en el contexto del nuevo mercado europeo.</abstract>
