<abstract displayLabel="Summary">El Consejo de Ministros de Medio Ambiente de la CEE se ha trazado como objetivo que en el año 2000 todos los municipios de más de 15.000 habitantes equivalentes tengan depuradas sus aguas residuales. Asimismo, antes del año 2005 todas las concentraciones urbanas de más de 2.000 habitantes equivalentes deberán disponer de los correspondientes sistemas de alcantarillado y tratamiento de depuración de aguas residuales. Para las ciudades de más de 10.000 habitantes equivalentes, el Consejo determinó igualmente que el plazo de adaptación a la nueva normativa sea, como máximo, a finales de 1998, si están ubicadas en zonas consideradas sensibles; es decir, cuando los vertidos se efectúan en aguas dulces de escasa renovación. En las zonas menos sensibles la directiva de la CEE establece que se puede recurrir a un tratamiento primario en poblaciones entre 10.000 y 150.000 habitantes equivalentes</abstract>
