<abstract displayLabel="Summary">This paper traces the historical development of methods for the determination of air polluants with particular reference to factory atmospheres. After the usual gestation period, a new series of analytical methods is being produced under the title Methods for the Determination of Hazardous Substances. Some of these methods are based on the techniques used in the red booklets, but, with increasing emphasis being placed on the determination of time-weighted-average concentrations, it has been found necessary in many cases to resort to more sophisticated analytical techniques</abstract>
