<abstract displayLabel="Summary">The way in which the pattern of legislation has changed since the previous symposium in 1968 and likely trends in future provisions are considered. The health and safety problems of current and new technologies are discussed in relation to the opportunities for improving occupational health in the ceramic industry and the way in which the new pattern of legislation encourages this. The contribution being made by current HSE research is described. The paper concludes by calling for improved occupational health services in the industry</abstract>
