<abstract displayLabel="Summary">A quartz linear lamp (QLL) is a compact infra-red heating lamp. It consists of a tungsten filament in a quartz envelope, which for space heating purposes is sorrounded by a ruby coloured filter. This paper describes the output of the lamps and relates this to present knowledge on the interaction of radiation with the eye; present safety recommendations are discussed critically in the light of the evidence</abstract>
