The study was undertaken to determine rates of production, particle size distribution, persistence, and blood content of aerosols generated by powered dental instrument forces, and the filtration efficiency of nine makes of surgical masks worn by dentists primarily for prevention of occupational infection. Such finite data would be fundamental to support a hypothesis for an airbone route of occupational infection by HBV in dental professionals
