This report examines the progress of the electric vehicle transition in Europe in 2026. It finds that EU car CO2 targets are driving record BEV sales, accelerating the availability of affordable electric models and supporting carmakers' compliance with emissions targets. It also assesses the implications of proposed changes to the 20302035 CO2 standards, arguing that weaker targets would slow EV uptake, reduce affordable model availability, increase oil dependency and weaken European carmakers' global competitiveness.
