Sumario: The objet of the present paper is to present results from a mortality study of 2209 white South African gold miners who started their mining exposure in 1936-43, and were selected for a study of respiratory disorders during 1968-71, when they were aged 45-54. In this study is examined: the dose response relation betwen lung cancer and exposure to silica dust measured in repirable dust particle-years; the combined effect of tobacco smoking and respirable dust particle-years; the association betwen lung cancer and silicosis identified at necropsy; possible reasons for different results obtained by the case-control studies and folow up studies
