Europe takes action against AIDS : conference provides direction for workplace policies / by Jennifer Conlin
Sumario: Since the beginning of the AIDS crisis, Europe has played a crucial role in the research and policy surrounding the disease. In 1990, a groundbreaking "AIDS and the workplace" conference took place in Paris sponsored by the European Community, among others including UNESCO. The conference, wich consisted of reports submitted on 10 themes, the most important themes studied was "AIDS in the medical workplace", where solid documentation existed that showed the transmission of the HIV virus to workers. It was the general recommendations provided by this panel of experts that have become the standard in Europe to ensure safety for medical professionnals. By far the most important ongoing project is the EU's "Europe against AIDS" program that was begun in 1991 and will run through 1995. The program is designed to coordinate EU activities concerning a wide range of projects in the fields throughout the member states and also includes two other AIDS programs within the EU, the research program and the assistance program for developing countries. Another project scheduled to begin this year in Spain is taking a hard look at exposure to HIV in the healthcare setting and will compile data from all the member states with the hopes of recommendations on how to limit exposure
