<abstract>Se revisan indicadores recientes relativos al proceso de innovación en España y Europa. Su análisis, en conjunción con las tendencias actuales de las políticas científicas, tecnológicas y de innovación, no permite predecir que Europa vaya a convertirse en la economía basada en el conocimiento más competitiva y dinámica del mundo en un plazo de 10 años, tal como se fijó el Consejo Europeo en el año 2000. La integración europea tropieza con obstáculos políticos que se relacionan con intereses nacionales, o resistencia a la pérdida de soberanía. España necesita implementar políticas abiertamente dirigidas a la integración europea como la mejor estrategia para converger con Europa</abstract>
