<abstract>Cuando se compara a los países latinoamericanos con otros países emergentes, especialmente Asia, se observa que sus sistemas financieros son más reducidos y, en muchos casos, más ineficientes. En el caso del sistema bancario esta realidad se explica fundamentalmente por las consecuencias negativas de los procesos de liberalización financieros, no acompañados de mejoras en la regulación y supervisión, y seguidos de crisis. El reducido desarrollo financiero de América Latina para su renta per cápita es posiblemente uno de los factores que contribuye a explicar el menor crecimiento de la región comparado con el de Asia</abstract>
