<abstract>Hablando en términos relativos, 2006 ha sido un buen año en cuanto a catástrofes naturales. Si en el anterior, la cifra de fallecidos por esta causa se elevó a 97.000 personas, el pasado ejercicio se ha reducido a 31.000. La principal causa de mortandad han sido los terremotos, especialmente los dos ocurridos en Indonesia que se saldaron con 6.600 víctimas mortales. Las tormentas e inundaciones, como las diversas sufridas por Filipinas, han sumado un total de 11.800 defunciones. Tanto la cifra total de daños como la de pérdidas aseguradas, son excepcionalmente bajas con respecto a los años precedentes.
