520  ‎$a‎The shift from internal combustion engines to battery electric vehicles is currently challenged. Achieving cost parity through battery pack cost reduction is key to continue exponential growth. Until recently, the shift from internal combustion engine vehicles to battery electric vehicles had been steadily accelerating, mainly driven by global CO2-reduction goals. New-car regulations set very strict limits-such as 49.5 grams of CO2 per kilometer by 2030 in the European Union-and the penalties for exceeding these fleet targets have been a major force pushing manufacturers toward electrification
