Key trends seen in Europe-Middle East-Africa (EMEA) insurance market in the first six months of 2009. Casualty and property classes of business in particular are still experiencing some rate reductions as there are generally a large number of carriers writing these riks and competing for market share. Motor insurance rates, previously unprofitable, have started to stabilise as historic rate reductions were unsustainable. As a result of the ongoing financial crisis, loss ratios in all classes of business have increased. Clients are looking to cut their costs wherever possible, although increased claims costs for carriers means they need to increase premium income to maintain a profitable portfolio. Trade credit and financial institutions insurance have been most impacted by the economic changes and these markets have hardened quickly. The majority of EMEA countries reported that they generally expect ongoing increases in rates over the next six months. It is thought that the current claims trend will continue to impact the market leading to some rate increases for clients. Underwriters are placing increased importance on good risk management by the insured, and these better managed risks may be able to avoid any significant premium increases
