Natural catastrophes are increasing both in frequency and intensity across the world, and there is growing evidence the upward trend is closely associated with global warming and climate change. A wide range of extreme and unusual weather events are taking place worldwide. Among the most recent examples are a sweltering heat wave in Queensland, Australia, and asevere cold spell in the US and Canada early this year, as well as asevere snowstorm in Jerusalem, Israel, and some parts of the Middle East last December.
