Electricity 2026 presents the IEA's global outlook for electricity demand, supply, emissions, grids and flexibility through 2030. It shows that worldwide electricity demand is rising quickly, driven by electrification, data centres, electric vehicles and industrial activity, with emerging economies contributing most of the growth. Renewables, especially solar PV, expand at a fast pace and are on track to surpass coal, while nuclear power continues to grow. As renewable generation increases, power grids face congestion and require major investment, updated regulations and new technologies to expand capacity. Battery deployment grows rapidly and strengthens system flexibility. Power sector CO2 emissions are expected to stabilize as low-carbon energy expands. The report also highlights ongoing concerns about affordability and security and stresses the need for resilient infrastructure and improved market design in the new Age of Electricity
