The Impact of COVID-19 on mortality in 34 countries and economies / Ou Dang, Shinichi Kamiya and Lei Zhou
Sumario: This article analyzes the mortality impact of the COVID-19 pandemic across 34 countries and economies by comparing observed mortality with long-term trends. Using stochastic mortality models, the study estimates excess deaths from 2020 to 2023 and evaluates heterogeneity across age groups and regions. It examines the relationship between excess mortality and socioeconomic factors such as government effectiveness, healthcare quality, and mobility. The paper also develops forward-looking mortality scenarios using Monte Carlo simulations to assess long-term implications for life expectancy. The findings provide relevant insights for insurers, policymakers, and actuarial risk management
