The results show that becoming a grandparent worsens mental health and self-rated health, and increases the use of outpatient care and out-of-pocket medical expenditures, especially among women and individuals with lower socioeconomic status. Intensive childcare for grandchildren, reductions in working hours, increased retirement, unhealthy health behaviors, and strained relationships with adult children are identified as key mechanisms.
