The Technology Committee of the British Occupational Hygiene Society has prepared recently a draft document "Technical Guidelines for the Design of Hearing Protectors for General Industrial Use", which it is hoped to publish shortly. This has brought to light certain problems in specifying the requirements for hearing protectors. The major areas where present day commercially available hearing protectors tend to be deficient are durability, size, head band force and pressure of ear muffs, confort and inherent safety. The difficulties associated with head band forces and pressure of ear muffs led to further work being undertaken wich has been reported already. In addition, users of hearing protection may also experience difficulties with communication, especially when they already have hearing deficiencies
